This class will give you skills to help you paint in watercolor, and lose your fears about the medium. Come have some fun, and learn some new skills or improve the skills you already have. This 6-week course is an exploration in not simply painting a picture , but creating magic with watercolors and taking your work to an entirely new level. Break away from a tight, laborious style and enjoy the fresh, clean, glowing effects achieved through the direct painting techniques. Marie will guide you on a journey of exploring your inner artist, showing you a fearless method of using the vibrancy of color and understanding the importance of color theory and value contrasts in your work. This course is designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Basic instruction in preparing clay for throwing and learning how to center, open up and throw a cylinder that can be made into a cup, vase, bowl, etc. Experienced students will be taught how to make pitchers, casseroles with lids, wine goblets, etc. Trimming and glazing are also included. Students need to be prepared with trimmed fingernails and a towel. Must be at least 18 years old. Class is limited to 8 people. Register Early!

FABRIC DESIGN & DYING
TECHNIQUES

This workshop is for quilters, fiber artists and those enjoying something new. Similar to Batik and Ikat, the process uses a reduction agent, moisture and heat to remove dye color in patterns on cloth and yarn. Designs will be “discharged” on commercial cotton, rayon, linen and silk fabric using stamps, stencils and immersion. Not all dyes and fabric will reduce, so bring pieces of your favorite cloth to try. Always produces many surprises!!
WOOD CARVING

This class will teach basic wood carving of songbirds and small shorebirds. Pre-sawn blanks will be provided at the first class for each student. The student may choose one of several species. Upon completion of the original piece new blanks may be sawn and purchased from the instructor after discussing the practicality of the chosen subject and the skill of the student. Students may choose to paint their carvings with acrylics with suitable reference photos of the chosen bird. The carvings may also be left in the natural color of the wood, usually pine, cedar or basswood, or stained. Sources of carving supplies will be made available, as well as discussions of knife sharpening techniques, carving tools available, painting materials and display applications. A limited number of carving knives will be available, so if a student has tools they are familiar with they should bring them to the class. Aprons are desirable to protect clothes.
